Bunny Williams' Live Magnolia Wreath and Garland inspired this fireplace mantel

When we start dreaming of Christmas, one of the first things we think about it our fireplace mantel. This part of the home always acts like a focal point, and our mantel inspiration is easy to spread throughout the house. We love to start with a theme or a color palette, then let that guide all of our decor choices. This year, we were really digging a nostalgic Christmas spirit, rustic elements, and also a shimmery black and white look. See how we interpreted all of these onto the mantel and steal the look yourself!

Rustic & Relaxed

With all of the gifts, parties, and cheer swirling around, sometimes it’s nice to focus on simple pleasures and natural elements. We love Bunny Williams’ Live Magnolia Wreath & Garland because it can be used through October, November, and December. Put it up in late Fall with spicey orange or ochre ribbon, then add festive plaid once the Christmas season rolls around.

We love the way the caramel-colored backs of the magnolia leaves works with Suzanne Kasler’s Mackenzie Plaid ribbon and fabric by the yard. Just a few touches of plaid, and you give this space a classic, library feel that’s oh-so-inviting!

Moroccan candle sleeves from Ballard Designs

For a little touch of metallic, we added a ton of flameless pillar candles in our Moroccan Candle Sleeves. The scalloped edges and wrapped sleeves add texture to our fireplace mantel and work beautifully with the ochre magnolia leaves.

Ombre your ornaments for a little extra touch of fun

When you’re picking accents for your mantel, it’s important to include something with height! Height helps draw your focus and also moves your eye from side to side. For this mantel, we choose two of Bunny Williams’ Star Hurricanes filled with our Mixed Metal Glass Ornaments. For an extra fun touch, we gave the ornaments an ombre effect by putting the dark ornaments in the bottom of the hurricane, then added the lighter ones on top!

Burlap stockings with a feather ornament complete the look

Of course, no holiday mantel is complete without stockings! We chose our Burlap stockings because of their natural texture, then added a feather ornament as an accent.

Nostalgic Noël

This is the time of year that we pull out family treasures and reflect on our holiday memories and happy times spent together. Nostalgic pieces are a huge part of the holidays, so we drew on details like our hand carved Chelsea Mirrorembroidered stockings, and vintage cars to inspire this Holiday mantel. With classic greenery and accents of red, this family room feels warm and inviting — the perfect space for opening gifts on Christmas morning.

Bunny Williams Embroidered Stockings from Ballard Designs

We tied Bunny Williams’ Embroidered Stockings to our classic pine greenery with red satin ribbon. Rather than centering your stockings, consider clustering them to one side for an asymmetrical arrangement. It adds a unexpected feel and is a great way to balance heavy furniture pieces that flank your fireplace.

Vintage Car Ornaments from Ballard Designs

For this nostalgic mantel, we were dying to use these adorable Vintage Car Ornaments. To create a focal point and give them height, we turned a grouping of books spines in to add extra texture. Then, we flanked the books with Bunny Williams’ Preserved Cypress Topiaries accented with small glass ornaments.

Watercolor Holiday Pillow from Ballard Designs

In the chair next to our fireplace, we popped this throw pillow with a watercolor car painted on the front. So cute!

Glam Black & White Holiday Mantel from Ballard Designs

For a more glamorous look, we embraced a graphic black and white color palette and brought in plenty of metallics and twinkle lights. The result is seriously pretty and easy to recreate for yourself!

Bunny Williams' Greek Key Hurricanes flank the fireplace mantel

As we already mentioned, it’s important to add height to your fireplace mantel. This time, we used Bunny Williams’ Greek Key Hurricanes which have a beautiful sculptural shape and a pretty gold finish. They work beautifully with our Ceramic Dipped & Dotted Ornaments!

Use preserved boxwood garland and crystal garland for a glam effect

To create a lush, glittering garland along the top of our mantel, we used our preserved boxwood garland which gave that burst of vibrant green. Then, in front of the boxwood, we used Suzanne Kasler’s Vera Garland. The garland is easy to bend and mold and gives a gorgeous texture and sparkle to your fireplace. We wove our Petite Starry Lights into the Vera Garland to give it the effect of glowing!

Hang your ornaments with white satin or velvet ribbon. You can easily tuck the pieces under your garland!

Add starry lights to mercury glass urns to create a glowing fire

While many of us may have a fireplace in our homes, many times they aren’t functioning (or perhaps it’s just too much work!) Instead, we filled our fireplace with mercury glass globes and vases filled with our battery operated lights to make them glow. The effect is just as magical as a real fire, and the clean up sure is easier!
