Dear How to Decorate,

We are currently in the process of remodeling/decorating our family room! The dimensions are roughly 18′ feet long by 13.5′ wide. We have a sliding door leading to the backyard on one wall and a door leading the the garage on the other.

We are currently turning the brick fireplace wall into a pallet wall! Our problem is how to arrange furniture and where to put the TV. We will be buying new furniture but need suggestions on what to buy based on how it would be arranged.

Can you please help with furniture ideas and how to place them? We are a newly married couple who love to entertain so lot’s of seating is important!

Thank you so much in advance!

Kristin,

A pallet wall is a fabulous idea!

You definitely want to be able to see the television and the fireplace at the same time. There is plenty of space to mount the television above the fireplace opening, but we have another idea! Carry the pallet wall around the right corner, and stop it a few inches before the slider door. Instead of trying to create a separate space for the television incorporate it into the plan and keep it where it is. Now it will look like one fabulous wall. Consider flanking the fireplace with Cartagena Wall Sconces for beautiful lighting. Add a mirror (we used our Cassidy mirror) for a sparkle contrast to the raw wood wall. To finish off the fireplace corner, along with the walls surrounding the sliding doors, hang Burlap Crewel Damask Panels.

The bones of your current furniture layout will work best for the space. We suggest building on that structure to give additional seating.  Pair a Graham sofa with two Carlyle Chairs. Add in side tables to hold your drinks when entertaining. Our Bonova Table is a fabulous coffee table option and the Durham End Table will fit perfectly between the sofa and the chairs. For a variety of finish and texture, we suggest a Blake Side Table between the chairs and a Classic Garden Seat tucked to the right of the sofa.

Your additional seating needs can be fulfilled by placing a couple of Leather Poufs near the fireplace hearth and adding a single chair, like our Leyland Chair, on the opposite wall. Pair the single chair with a cabinet and artwork, like our Blanc De Printemps Floral Art, so the corner space feels like it is part of the room. Our Bombay Cabinet is the ideal option to supplement the pallet wall style.

Happy Decorating!
