Dear How to Decorate,

We have a large blank wall in our family room. The ceiling slants from 14 feet to 18 feet across the room.

We are new to the home and I have no idea how to fill the space. I do know our television needs to be a part of the plan. It is only 42″ … flat screen.

Linda,

With large wall spaces, it isn’t necessary to fill the entire wall. Typically, a good starting guideline is to stay below the top of your highest architectural line in the room. For your room that would be the top of the transom window on the left.

Even though your flat screen television is 42 inches, it is a good size to incorporate into a larger piece.

A great piece of furniture for your space would be our Wesley Media Console with Towers. These pieces give your media equipment a “look” of purpose and once in place, they also provide an anchor on which you can add a fabulous wall collection. Our example below showcases over-sized wall plaques but you could certainly use stunning art pieces and mirrors instead.

Another idea to bring your towering wall down to size … consider hanging drapery panels on your windows. Any elements in the room that provide a point on which your eyes can focus is always a good thing.

Happy Decorating!
