Dear Style Studio team,

I’m in desperate need of some design help for my small and dated 12-by-18-foot front living room.

Because of its small size and awkward placement of the French doors, I haven’t replaced the well worn sofa and loveseat or placed anything on the back wall.

My husband loves the red walls…. I’m open to painting the room. I would love to be able to keep the glass front bookcase if possible. The room is viewable from the front entry hall but the room tends to be used as a second family room, my reading and nap room on the main level.

Best,

Christa C.

Dear Christa,

Thank you so much for your recent dilemma. We think we have a few suggestions to help you make your living function better.

Light Sisal- RugsFirst, we think one of our natural rugs would look great — so we chose our Light Sisal Rug (pictured right) with a beige border.

Next, we love the Baldwin Sectional which can replace the loveseat and sofa. We recommend either the Natural Linen or the Khaki slipcovers. In front of the sectional, our Durham Bunching Tables are a good choice and very versatile. You can keep your bookcase where it is.

On the wall above the sectional, we chose our Paysage de Coqueicots. On the end of the sectional, try one of our Terrific Trio Tables with a fringed burlap cloth and a Tasseau Lamp with a Seagrass shade for a great look.

We hope these suggestions help you finish this room.

Dear Style Studio team,

Thanks for all the great ideas.

A couple more questions: If I was to paint this room to give it a casual yet sophisticated touch with a more feminine feel without making my husband feel uncomfortable … what would you suggest? Would this change your design items that you’ve suggested?

Best,

Christa C.

Dear Christa,

Here are a couple of neutral tones for the room – Pittsfield Bluff #HC-24 or Georgian Green #HC-115. Both are from Benjamin Moore.

Make sure you purchase a “sample size” of each color and paint a large square (at least 2-feet-by-2-feet) so that you can look at the paint in the room.

Don’t forget to send pictures when you are done. We know our readers would love to see your ideas.

Happy Decorating!
