Furnishing A Foyer and Niche Area

  • How to Decorate Team

Question:
Dear Ballard Designs,

I need your assistance with furnishing 2 areas:

1. Open foyer area

2. Huge niche (above open foyer area)

They are both painted “Mesa” by Martha Stewart and the floor is Brazilian Cherry Wood. I would also like to replace the lighting fixtures in the foyer and surrounding rooms. I will be replacing the stairway with black wrought iron banisters. I do not have any attachment to the furniture that you currently see in the foyer. If I keep the current table, I would most likely remove the “scallops” from the corners to simplify the look.

The entire house has bright white trim throughout. I am interested in purchasing several of the Tuscan Bookshelves to fill an entire wall to create a “library”. Which color of wood should I select – match the wood floors? Match the white trim? Or go with black?

Thank you for your help!

Laurie

Answer:
The Tuscan Bookcases in the Rubbed Black would complement your wall coloring as well as the wood floors in your foyer.

In the niche above the foyer, we would suggest a piece of art. This space can easily carry a large painting and our online selection caters to most tastes and home décor styles.  For example, our Enchanted II is a 36″ square landscape and would look great paired with large vase of reeds at the corner to enhance the natural look. Another suggestion would be to lean our verdigris finished Garden District Mirrors against the back of the wall. If the space allows, three of these placed side by side will add depth and flair to this room. You could also place a grass paper wall covering in the niche to provide a distinctive natural backdrop to your object d’art.

Smooth lines and soft lighting are perfect to welcome any guest into your home. Our Benedetta Console would be a great addition to your foyer and the Chelsea Chandelier could add a warm glow. Why not add a rug and runner to invite your guests in? Try the Masina Rug or our Cezeres Rug. Above the console, we suggest an impressive statement piece of art such as the large Italian Half Round.  As a finishing touch, place two Buffet Lamps on either side of the artwork.
